Paul Little reviewed Andrew Paul Wood’s Shadow Worlds: A history of the occult and esoteric in New Zealand in the July edition of North & South:

‘Spooky stuff. Historian Wood has set himself the task of describing the history of all things esoteric — and some things that are only arguably so — in Aotearoa New Zealand since colonisation.

With the rise of the alt-right and its ever-evolving panoply of conspiracy theories it could reasonably be suggested that New Zealanders have never been readier to believe in evil forces at work around them, so it’s useful to be reminded that belief in the frankly preposterous is nothing new.
